Miss Reba's Mission Statement......

I'm here to turn reading instruction on its head!

The definition of turn on its head: to cause something to be the opposite of what it was before.For years reading has been taught poorly. It has been taught by well-meaning teachers who just weren't taught how kids learn to read. Kids have been taught harmful strategies like memorizing words, guessing words and that English just doesn't make sense! That couldn't be further from the truth.  With the Science of Reading on our side, we know almost all kids can learn to read..but they must be taught properly.

I'm on a mission to start a reading rebellion. I want to ditch boring and ineffective reading instruction, unleash the science of reading for all educators, parents and hopeful reader. I want everyone to be able to access high quality reading instruction and fuel the fire of all children to become a fearless reader one wild word at a time. I'm here to help you become a rebel teacher or a rebel parent and raise a READER.

My name is Rebecca Halliday. I am a certified teacher here in New Brunswick, Canada. I have spent the last 11 years running my own independent school with a focus on literacy, math and healthy development of the child! I also have been running an after-school reading academy for the last 15 years. I have always been passionate about literacy intervention, the science of reading and helping struggling readers. I have learned so much from running my school and the many kids that have graced my classroom. These kids have taught me what it really takes to be an effective educator, they are my greatest teachers. I use a multi-sensory, Orton-Gillingham-based approach. In my day school, we root all reading instruction in the Science of Reading and a structured literacy approach However, we are REBELS, we are going to do whatever it takes to make learning meaningful and relatable and engaging! We are going to rebel against what you've been told about your child and their abilities, REBEL against what THEY believe about themselves and make reading come to LIFE. We also are going to REBEL against the idea that phonics is boring. NOTHING is boring with Riverbend Reba 😉. With my approach, their dedication and hard work, your love and support - they WILL reach their potential and become a reader.

Here's what kids need to learn to read....​

 

direct instruction from a great teacher (that's me..or maybe it's you!)​

 

phonemic awareness - the understanding that words are made up of SOUNDS and the ability to manipulate those sounds.

 

​Systematic instruction that follows a clear scope & and sequence

 

​intentional & purposeful practice activities with lots of opportunities to decode words, write words and use words in sentences.​

 

Repetition but with fun and engaging activities - repetition is key!​

 

multisensory instruction - they need to see words, say words, hear words, and write words - movements & gestures make it fun while committing it to memory.​

 

opportunities to read decodable text​

 

direct teaching in comprehension, vocabulary, and language building.​

 

to build their knowledge by sticking with topics for a long enough time to develop their background knowledge and deep understanding of the topic.​

 

access to high-quality, above-grade-level text that is read aloud to them every single day that reinforces the topics they are learning.​

 

an opportunity to write about the topics they are learning about!​​

 

If your child or student is having a hard time learning to read and any of these pieces are missing from their reading instruction, they are always going to struggle with reading.
